Miguel Primo de Rivera.
Primo de Rivera is seen by many as an inapt leader and lacking diplomatic acumen, alienating many of his supporters with his inadequate ideology. After he rose to power following a coup d’état, he set himself to end corruption in Spain – to achieve this, Rivera declared Martial Law, suspended the Constitution, and implemented a series of oppressive measures as well as censorship and austerity. This political stance worsened living conditions, increasing tensions felt in Spain, and it is among this instability that Francisco Franco (which would later become the famous Spanish dictator) is promoted to general. This political, economic and social turmoil would culminate in 1936 with the beginning of the Spain Civil War.
