This mountain range was charted on maps from the 1790s until 1880s. Thought to begin near the Niger River in West Africa, it would split the continent transversally. It was the French explorer Louis Gustave Binger who eventually confirmed that these mountains did not exist, during his 1887-1889 expedition to chart the Niger River.
